Beethoven's "Für Elise," officially titled Bagatelle No. 25 in A minor (WoO 59 and Bia 515), is a widely recognized piano piece often referred to as an Albumblatt. Although it was published posthumously in 1867, the piece is believed to have been written around April 27, 1810, according to the now-lost original manuscript discovered by Ludwig Nohl.

The commonly played version is based on Nohl’s transcription, while Barry Cooper’s later version features notable changes, such as delays in the left-hand arpeggios and additional bars in the transition to the B section. The original manuscript likely had the tempo marking Poco Moto, whereas Cooper's version includes Molto Grazioso. Beethoven may have intended for "Für Elise" to be part of a bagatelle cycle.

The identity of "Elise" remains unclear. Max Unger suggested that Nohl might have misread the title, proposing "Für Therese" instead, referring to Therese Malfatti, a friend of Beethoven. Klaus Martin Kopitz thought it could be Elisabeth Röckel, a soprano and friend of Beethoven. Michael Lorenz’s research suggests the manuscript came from Therese von Droßdik’s estate, challenging this theory. In 2012, Rita Steblin proposed that Juliane Katharine Elisabet Barensfeld, who used “Elise” as a variant of her name, might be the dedicatee, with Beethoven possibly dedicating the piece as a favor to Malfatti.
